I research historical and genealogical projects that may take several days or weeks to complete and smaller ones which need only a few hours. My specialiality is history from c.1600 and I am proficient in transcribing associated documents written in English. I am interested in the former status, ownership and use of land in the past, particularly changes brought about by enclosure and the loss of common land (arable, meadow and waste) over time.
If you are an historical researcher or organisation located at a distance from the south-east or are abroad and need copies of specific documents, attendance can be made at repositaries on your behalf to obtain photographs, photocopies and prints.
I undertake genealogy projects tracing one or several lines. If you are already working on your own family history but have hit a brick wall, I can help with your research. My speciality and skills in local history means that I can add detail to the history of your family. If you are seeking the history of your house or a group of houses, I can help.
The result of my research is delivered in a written report that details my findings and where appropriate, suggestions for further study. The report provides archival and bibliographic references for all documents and books that I have consulted even if they do not provide answers to your questions. As in all historical and genealogical research, it must be remembered that results cannot be guaranteed. This is because relevant sources may not have survived or are missing, incomplete or illegible.
